Wonder Woman in Ankara #7

Wonder Woman was created by Dr William Moulton Marston in 1941 and is the © copyright trademark of DC Comics. My Wonder Woman stories are only fan fiction and based, primarily, on the 1970s CBS TV show (albeit, updated to the present time of writing). However, any resources from adaptations and the comics may be utilized. All characters are entirely fictional. Except for any characters found in DC Comics or related adaptations, these stories and characters are my creations, unless otherwise stated. In my stories, Wonder Woman is the only known superhero.

07 You are dust to me

He stood at the foot of the elevator preventing its doors from closing. His gun aimed at the pathetic ball gagged wreck shrinking in the corner: sweating with fear; tears streaming down her cheeks; saliva dribbling off her chin.

There comes a time in everyone’s life when the essence of who you are gets tested. One that you’re unlikely to foresee until it’s there in front of you. A time when all former qualifications and platitudes accumulated in the course of a lifetime will mean nothing. A test where passing it doesn’t necessarily reward the recipient with good fortune or a long life. Yet for most of us, the reprehensible consequences of failing such a test are far worse, no matter how long we live.

For Abdul Alkan that time was now. The test was before him. He stepped into the elevator. On the way down, he removed Jean’s gags. She started shrieking. He looked at his reflection in the glass; he was perspiring more than she was. He felt sick to the stomach; and for once, it wasn’t due to overeating. There was no time to ponder, he had to snap out of it.

The lieutenant bent over and held Jean by the chin.

“You need to be quiet,” he said. “I’m going to do what I can to get you away from here.”

The shrieking reduced to a mild blubbering.

When the door opened, they saw two security guards – who were assigned to check the elevator usage under General Erol’s instructions – appear to be in altercation with a tall, robust, gentleman. They allotted from the elevator but kept back to observe.

“I don’t care what your orders are,” the man adamantly remarked, “I have reason to believe a good friend of mine may be in serious danger up at the top of the tower – you need to let me pass.”

“He’s an American,” noted Jean. “Who is he?”

“I don’t know,” Alkan replied, “but let’s try to quietly get by unnoticed.”

They meekly attempted to pass with their heads bowed. It may have worked, except for one of the guards recognizing Alkan from earlier.

“Hey, wait, friend,” a thick moustached guard said in Turkish, but continued in English. “You’re with MIT?”

“MIT?” said the American gentleman.

“No, not me,” Alkan denied.

“Yeah, you are,” insisted the guard, unhelpfully. “I saw you with the general and an American lady earlier. This man’s name is, err…”

“Steve Trevor,” said he.

“Steve Trevor,” repeated security, “and he’s looking for, err…”

“Diana Prince,” said Steve.

“She fits the description of the lady you escorted up the Atakule earlier,” the guard confirmed, even more unhelpfully. “I tell this man he can’t pass due to a special operation in progress at the top,” he said tapping is snout, ironically, oblivious to his indiscretions.

For the second time in a matter of minutes, Alkan’s conscience spoke to him. Before he could even process the consequences, he appeared to be placing himself back in danger. “CIA?” he said.

“No, IADC,” said Steve, showing Alkan his identity card.

“You’re IADC?” interjected Jean.

“Sure am,” confirmed Steve with a smile. “What happened to your eye?”

“There is no time for this now,” Alkan cut in. “I am MIT. Please, guards, escort this lady into the nearest taxi for the American Embassy.”

It felt surprisingly good to Alkan to see the guards obey his orders. Whether this relief was more due to a sense of satisfaction at his quick thinking under pressure, or the moral imperative, he would never know.

He turned to Steve. “Come with me. I think your colleague may be in grave danger.”

“I believe you,” said Steve. “I knew she was up the tower because I was tracking her phone. The signal disappeared a few minutes ago. I just hope we’re not too late.”

“We must be careful. My general is a bad woman. She’s done terrible things.”

Steve stopped him. “Would you be prepared to say that in a court of law?”

I-I don’t know what happened” said Fahri on the neck of the crane, after witnessing a ball of light replace Diana Prince’s dissent.

“I do,” Erol said. “Wonder Woman saved her! Prepare for battle. She’ll be here any –”

“Any second now?” said Wonder Woman. “That was what you were about to say?”

Wonder Woman was standing the opposite side of the deck to Erol. Fahri raised his handgun, crouched on the crane. Gur happened to be just out of view.

Erol composed herself. It may have suddenly been all too real to finally be in front of the world-renowned super heroine, standing tall in her striking red, gold, and blue star-spangled outfit with her hands placed firmly on her hips. Her very presence a challenge; her unworldly power to be tested…

Any hesitancy didn’t prevent the general using the temporization for a tactical advantage. A subtle nod to Gur set him off in an anti-clockwise direction, along the annular observation platform.

“So, the great American heroine graces us with her presence,” said Erol.

“Oh, I didn’t realize you were a fan,” Wonder Woman replied, taking a few steps forward.

“I’m no fan,” dismissed Erol in a cocky demeanour. “To me, you’re nothing but a tiresome nuisance – soon to be extinguished!”

“Then let’s not waste time on small talk,” Diana suggested. “I want Reza Bayar alive.”

“I expect you do,” Erol said with a grin. “He’s a very virile young man.”

Wonder Woman was a little taken aback. “I see you have a mind like a sewer, Erol.”

“You mean the mind of a great general,” Erol boasted. “Ask yourself why I lured you to the Atakule Tower? The answer is its blind bends. You are surrounded, dopey. Look behind you!”

Not only was it true but serious: Gur pointing his handgun to the rear of Wonder Woman; Fahri looking down on her from the top of the crane; and Erol stood at the opposite end, loading her wand with another cylinder. Wonder Woman was fast but couldn’t simultaneously bracelet block at 180 degrees.

However, luck can sometimes change fast.

“No, I think you’ll find you are surrounded, General,” said Steve Trevor, opening the door, his Glock-19 pistol in his hand.

“Steve!” whispered Diana under her breath.

Erol scoffed. “Just you, is it?” Her gaze still on Wonder Woman; her wand’s light beam locked on target.

“No,” said Steve. “I’m afraid to report you have a mutiny in the ranks.”

When Gur dropped his weapon and raised his hands, Erol knew Trevor wasn’t bluffing. Alkan appeared with his handgun pressed into the big man’s back.

“Alkan, you are dust to me!” rasped Erol. “You shall pay for such treachery.”

“You’ll be too busy paying for your own treachery,” said Steve. “I have friends in high places and reported your conduct. MIT should be cleaning your desk out as we speak.

Hey, hear those sirens, General?  The police are on their way.”

“So, I have nothing left to lose,” Erol solemnly pronounced.

“FIRE!!” she roared.

Confronted by the mysteriously deadly wand light, Wonder Woman had little choice but to cross tap her bracelets, creating a repelling burst of energy. This couldn’t be described as a subtle defence. Whatever the light beam particles were, they dispersed along with the force field’s backdraught, flooring everyone in its wake.

In its aftermath, Erol was nowhere to be seen. Steve clambered out of the doorway where he sheltered during the blast.

Yardım edin!!” cried Fahri, repeatedly.

Springing onto the crane, Wonder Woman found Erol’s field leader dangling on its hook by one hand. She knelt down to him.

“I guess you could call this karma, Fahri,” Diana reflected. Just as he was about to fall, she reached for him. “I’m letting you off the hook,” she teased, rising to her feet with the agent fearfully clinging to her arm, “as I know you were keen to do the same for Diana Prince.”

Wonder Woman whirled Fahri back onto the observation platform where Steve held him at gunpoint.

Before Diana could greet Steve, another scream was heard around the bend. Gargantuan Gur had managed to tackle Alkan out of his handgun and proceeded to beat the little lieutenant. Wonder Woman tapped on the back of the heavy’s shoulder. He loomed over Diana, menacingly, electing the moment to seize her in his arms. One jaw-cracking straight strike dropped the hulk to his knees. The damage done. Wonder Woman toppled him over into a much earned sleep.

“That’s how you deal with big bullies,” she told Alkan.

I-I follow you for years,” confessed Alkan, “but seeing you here, in real life, I swear never to have witnessed such a beautiful angel! Thank you! Thank you!”

Diana beamed. “You’re a brave young man who knows the difference between right and wrong.”

When Diana returned to Steve, the police were attending to Fahri. Although she proved to be quite a distraction, in her costume, Steve’s natural air of authority dissuaded them from making any approach.

“Long time no see,” said Steve.

“Well, you’re timing couldn’t have been better,” Wonder Woman jovially replied. “Thanks, Steve. Although, I feel that was a little too close for comfort!”

“I’m sure you would have dealt with it, Wonder Woman. Where’s Diana?”

“Don’t worry, she’s gone to ground for a while to keep a low profile. I don’t think Diana was expecting you in Ankara so soon.”

“I couldn’t be sure when I received her message. I figured she might need my help.”

“Steve, did you see where General Erol went?”

“She never passed me in the entrance. Perhaps she got back down the tower before the police arrived.”

“Or maybe she’s still up the tower,” suggested Diana. “Look!”

Wonder Woman pointed to an aircraft fast approaching the Atakule. As it drew closer, she could see it was the same sleek aeroplane used to kidnap Reza Bayar from Memorial Hospital. The noise of the engine and sudden downward draft of air pressure suggested the plane to be hovering overhead.

“She’s on the roof!” Wonder Woman deduced. “Steve, get some men up to the top. I’m taking the more direct route!”

Hopping back onto the crane, Wonder Woman vaulted up to the roof of the Atakule. Sure enough, Erol was climbing a rope ladder up to the aircraft when she noticed Wonder Woman at the bottom of the long sloping roof.

“Leaving so soon, General,” hollered Wonder Woman. “Or should I say former General?”.

Wonder Woman took off her tiara and slung it at the rope ladder. With its binds sliced through, Erol flopped onto the roof, tumbling down the icy slope towards her foe. Diana coolly returned her headgear, and detached her lasso, ensnaring the general several feet away in the lying snow. She pulled her catch over for inspection.

“You’re compelled to tell the truth,” said Diana. “Where are you holding Reza Bayar?”

Diana flexed her lasso and repeated the question. Still no answer. “You are compelled to tell the truth!” she said, notching up the lasso.

Erol cried the most sickening laughter accompanied by a pearly white mocking smile of defiance. More concerning, Diana’s tiara detected the same static buzzing as she found with Bayar emanating from Erol herself.

“It seems your puerile parlour trick doesn’t work on me, Wonder Woman,” Erol said, nastily. “I shall tell you the truth at my own volition. Young Bayar will die if I’m detained, for he is running out of time, and I alone know where he is being held. The only way you’re going to find him is to let me take you prisoner.”

The icy gale blew through Wonder Woman’s hair. She closed her eyes in the dawning reality of the situation. Diana knew her enemy was right. She nodded. Erol threw off the lasso and grabbed her cap where it lay in the snow.

“Lia, bring her alongside the tower for the pickup,” said the general, speaking to the aircraft pilot via her watch.

Steve and the police officers emerged on the rooftop as the plane was brought around. He called to Wonder Woman in vain. Erol grinned at Wonder Woman’s stony expression.

“Sorry, we must fly,” the general gleefully told her.

  1. # 1 great chapter and great action. 1 now we know the surprise: StevevTrevor himself 2 great conversation between Wonder Woman and Erol, both of them within their character. More on the topic later. 3 Erol is unaffected by the lasso … Erol is making the tiara buzz … hmmm nothing good for Wonder Woman from here …. More detailed comments to follow. Thanks!

      # 1, I’ve just corrected distinguished to extinguished, which makes a lot more sense! I don’t know if you were wondering what on earth Erol meant 😀 1) Yes! 2) Thanks 3) No, can’t be good news. Thank you..

      • # 1 yes i was wondering but I thought my not understanding was due to my non being English mother tongue

  2. # 1 second series of thoughts 1 reader’s expectations: yes we all have expectations but then it’s up to the Author to decide. Then, this chapter was pretty good and intense. Finally it’s not over and I believe the best is still to come 2 Wonder Woman’s arrival, her stance, her words, her pose … so in line with her heroic character, reminded me her arrival in the arena for her battle with the Lost Siren (not a good precedent) 3 while Wonder Woman was concentrated in her role she didn’t realize Erol’s tactics. Erol proved to be able to talk and act: one point to her. That’s the difference between an heroine who counts on her superiority and an opponent who is a trained tactician 4 attitude: Wonder Woman ironic as always, Erol cocky as expected, obvious she feels challenged in her own turf and she wants to prove she is second to no one, heroine or not 5 Erol again in the role of the alpha queen bee: she can’t think to man if not in a way of sex toys. Wonder Woman disgust is clear. 6 Wonder Woman final confrontation with Erol: the general is too quiet and calm like she knows something more than the others, she knows the lasso is not working on her … why ? What else she knows ? Bottom line: great chapter, very tense, you can cut the air with a knife !!!!

      # 1, hi 1) I try not to make it completely predictable 2) Yeah, there are similarities between the two situations. It’s classic Wonder Woman really! 3) Sure, that’s true. I’ll let the reader decide whether there was any vulnerability to Erol there 4) Probably Erol or Marsha are the most cocky female opponents Diana has faced in my stories 5) Yeah, this one certainly has a bit of a kink about her 🙂 6) It’s a peculiar situation for Diana to be going into now. Wonder Woman thought she had pretty much had it sown up, only to realize it wasn’t over at all, and she had to take an unexpected journey. That’s annoying enough, but then add Erol showing herself to be an unknown quantity, and laughing in her face. It isn’t the best of situations for Diana! There’s no love lost! Thanks for your interesting take on events.

      • # 1 some 1 “unknown quantity” ? 2 the lasso scene reminds me “the man who could not die episode” where the guy is able to resist the power of the lasso 3 yes, Erol and Marsha from this point of view have a lot in common

  3. Mercian Comics

Hi, # 1, 1) unknown quantity because it’s strange the lasso doesn’t work and there is a buzzing from her tiara. All very odd 2) Yes, I think I have been drawing on that episode during this story. The funny thing is it’s possibly my least favourite episode! 😄 3) I don’t think Erol and Marsha would get along at all, though. Thanks!

  4. # 1 1 yes, thanks, clear. 2 also one of my least favourite epiSode 3 I agree, probably the only thing that could unite them is their hate for Wonder Woman. They are the only ones who were able to win a battle of word with Wonder Woman 4 Very good contrast between the “gleefull” mood of Erol and the “closed eyes – nodding in resignation” of Wonder Woman. Very different from her arrival: famous power stance with hands on her hips 5 it really looks like she is beginning to realize something is wrong. Who is this strange woman ? Why is she so confident ? Why my “toys” are not working on her ? What other surprises she has to discover … 6 counting the points now Erol is leading 4-0 (I) she cornered Wonder Woman where she wanted to, only Steve’s arrival saved the day (ii) she was able to escape without the amazon being able to stop her (iii) she resisted Wonder Woman’s lasso (iv) she captured her 7 gems of the dialogue “puerile parlour trick” really defines the current distance and contrast between the two opponents. It looks to me like the difference between a seasoned and experienced woman (a real cougar, a “Stallion Woman”) and a young inexperienced naive young girl. 8 Let’s see what Steve’s role will be. Bottom line: thanks, can’t wait for the next chapter !!!

    • Mercian Comics

Hi, # 1 2) 😀 3) Yes 4) Psychologically tough for Diana 5) I know. That must be on Diana’s mind as she goes on a flight 6) I think Wonder Woman might protest she scored some points too, but you’re right 😄 7) thank you, very kind. It’s better when I type the words I actually mean to say! Erol has outsmarted Diana with her tactics for much of the story, even when she hasn’t appeared 8) Steve’s already been very useful. Thanks, I shall get on with the next chapter as soon as I can…

  5. I love when stories take unexpected turns, and this fit the bill. If it is possible, I feel like Erol has shown her resourcefulness, yet I can’t shake the feeling she has even more up her sleeve. And I had almost forgotten about the ball gag from earlier, showing a certain side to Erol. The tension is building, and I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

  6. # 1 speaking about Wonder Woman and gag. This is a golden age comic panel where Countess Drashka Niski did something very similar to our favourite Amazon. I hope the link works.

  7. Hello and many thanks for this great chapter! A a masterpiece with many situations and characters playing on it. And obviously the final surprise for WW. To be held captive in that way, it’s not common…, normally she’s chloroformed, or threatened with a weapon, but this way.., it’s smart and maybe more easy than other tactics, but really leave Wonder Woman defenseless, possibly a bit humiliated… and at the total mercy of Erol! Well, let’s see what Erol have planned next. She’s clever, and ingenous enough to confront WW responses, but will she control herself when the prize is so high?

    La Ral.

    • Mercian Comics

Hi, La Ral, good to hear from you. Yes, Erol is a smart cookie. I would say the smartest female enemy Wonder Woman has faced in my stories. Both ladies will have to take the opportunities as they arise, and who prospers depends on quick thinking as much as physical ability. Thank you for your flattering feedback.

  8. # 1 Hi La Ral. Happy that new readers show up to comment the Author’s work, He really deserves it for his commitment and results. My personal comment on the situation: I am more concerned for Wonder Woman, she is the one in uncharted waters, she usually rely on her “gadgets” and powers. She has already discovered that her “gadgets” are ineffective on Erol, she is probably starting to wonder who she is against this time. Control and cold mind: track record wise and situation wise Erol has a clear advantage, she is a trained top level soldier who in her life had to elbow her way to the top (a woman in a male world) while Diana is a “favourite” of the god. Only open point: physical ability, it is where usually Wonder Woman has an advantage, but this time I am confused and I have no more certainty …. What do you think ? Let’s see and thanks again to the Author.

    • Hi! Well I’ve been also following the author and his WW stories,.. They should be used in the TV show! 🙂 About the current story, the development is very open and difficult to predict, specially because Erol has succeed on capturing WW, but once captured, she has planned what to do with WW? I f not, WW will have some chances to reverse the situation. I also consider that ok, Erol it’s smart and a well trained soldier, but on the other hand if she’s not patient, her anger could be her doom against WW, who’s used to deal with risky situations. So I think that WW will finally succeed (and I hope!) but let’s see. Against WW this time is that she’s totally compromised as Erol has an hostage, and this is new for her. If Erol plays well her cards, and plans good tests or fights (I still remember the one vs Lost Siren) that put WW to the limit maybe she will have an option to defeat her…and fix new plans for our lovely heroine…. Let’s wait for the new chapter!

      • Mercian Comics

Hi there, I am flattered you think my stories are worthy featuring on a TV series! This forthcoming chapter, I think, will have some surprises. Erol is smart, but she has never taken on someone like Wonder Woman before. Both are confident, although, Diana was robbed of victory at the Ataukule Tower. You make a well observed point about Erol’s impatience could possibly be a weakness if she doesn’t control it with military discipline. I’m glad you’re enjoying these stories, and thanks for commenting, it means a lot to me. I hope you will comment again. Just so we know who you are, giving yourself a nickname would be helpful. Thank you.
